Plan a Safe Trip

We all know that everyone should wear their seat belts, and that small children should always be in their car seat. But on a long car trip it’s tempting to unbuckle the seat belt for resting or naps. Rather than unbuckling, be sure to bring enough pillows to create a comfortable space when the kids want to nap. That will allow the child to remain in an upright position so that their seat belt is still effective.

It’s also critical to secure heavy items inside the vehicle so they won’t injure someone in an accident. Portable video players, small coolers, luggage, etc. will become dangerous missiles in even a small crash. If heavy items won’t fit in the trunk, place them securely under a seat, or use straps or bungee cords to secure them in place.

When packing the car, plan to keep the rear window unobstructed, and instruct the kids to keep items out of the way of the way so they don’t block the driver’s view.
