Packing the Car

Make a list of items to bring on your trip. If you do this a few days in advance you will have time to shop for items if needed.

Pack the car as much as possible the night before the trip. This will reduce the early-morning stress and delay in getting on the road. The last thing you want is to start the trip off already stressed and tired.

Be realistic about how much space you have. You may have to forego the cooler and just stop for drinks as you go. Or perhaps you need to rent a roof rack to allow for additional space.

Find a system of packing the trunk that allows you to find items when you need them. If your child suddenly needs a new pair of socks, then you’ll want to know exactly which side of the car their bag is located.

Soft luggage or duffle bags are easier to pack than hard suitcases. Several small bags are easier to arrange than one large bag.

Use the storage areas inside the car effectively. Before the trip, remove all items that you don’t need from the glove compartment, under the seats and all other pockets and bins inside the car. If your car doesn’t have pockets behind the front seats, you can buy strap on pockets—these are great places for keeping travel kits for the kids.

Must-Haves: disposable wipes, sunscreen, paper towels, maps, small first aid kit (band-aids, aspirin, antiseptic spray, Pepto Bismol), blankets and pillows, jackets or sweaters for everyone, small plastic trash bag, snacks.

Highly Recommended: sunglasses, sandals, bottled water, plastic cups, bottle opener, outside toy such as a Frisbee or ball.
